M&T听Debit & Credit Cards with Chip Technology

Your security is one of our top priorities. That鈥檚 why M&T Debit and Credit Cards feature the enhanced security of chip technology.

Chip cards, also referred to as EMV cards or Smartcards, contain embedded microprocessors that strengthen transaction security and provide other encryption capabilities that traditional magnetic stripe cards can鈥檛 offer. They are the听global standard because of their ability to reduce incidents of counterfeit fraud when used at a chip-enabled terminal.

Enhanced Security 鈥 Worldwide

Your听card comes with an encrypted microchip that will help protect you from fraud and counterfeit transactions when used at a chip-enabled terminal. The chip also allows you to pay at international merchant locations where chip cards are the standard.

Custom PIN

Experience yet another layer of security for your M&T Debit or Credit Card with a PIN that only you know. You may be asked to enter your PIN when using your new M&T听Debit or Credit Card听at a chip-enabled merchant terminal. If you already have a PIN associated with your M&T card, you can keep it or set a new one.听

How It Works听

At a Chip-Enabled Terminal

  1. Insert the chip portion of the card into the terminal with the chip facing up.听It鈥檚 important to leave the card in the terminal until the transaction is complete 鈥 if you remove the card too soon, the transaction will end, and your purchase will not be processed
  2. Follow the prompts on the terminal鈥檚 screen.听Depending on the terminal, you may or may not be asked to enter your PIN while your card is in the terminal
  3. View transaction amount.听The terminal will display the purchase amount
  4. Once the transaction is approved, you will be prompted to remove your card and take your receipt.听You may be asked to sign the receipt for the transaction if you weren鈥檛 prompted to enter your PIN

At a Contactless-Enabled Terminal听

If your M&T Debit or Credit Card听听contains the contactless indicator听 on the front of the card, simply:

  1. Look for the Contactless Symbol at checkout听
  2. Tap听your M&T Credit or Debit Card on the checkout terminal
  3. Your payment is processed in seconds

At a Non-Chip Terminal

For Debit Cards

Simply swipe your card, then press 鈥淒ebit鈥 and enter your PIN or press 鈥淐redit鈥 and sign for your purchases, if necessary.

For Credit Cards

You may not need to use your PIN. Simply swipe your card and sign, if necessary.

M&T debit and credit cards with chip technology will continue to feature the magnetic stripe on the back of the card, so they can be used anywhere.

Online and Phone Transactions

These types of transactions will be conducted the same way they are today and do not require a PIN.
